Let’s face it, property taxes in Texas are high, as we don’t have a state income tax. One way to lessen the impact of property taxes is to file a homestead exemption on your primary residence. You only have to file for this exemption one time, until you move to a new residence.
To qualify for a homestead exemption, in addition to the home being your primary residence, you must have resided in the home as of January 1 of the year that you are submitting your filing. The exemption must be filed with your county’s appraisal district by April 30.
